So I've been chatting with a friend today through email back and forth, and I'm trying so hard to convince her that these jerks in office are hijacking our country like a fox sneaking into a hen house. It's difficult. When a person just brushes things off that are blatent and obvious to more than 70% of the american population now, I realize that not everyone sees things for what they are. When you live in a town that's pretty much taken care of by the gov't, you would see things differently then from the perspective of a working class town where the majority of people are just getting by. She does realize they have tarnished haloes as it were, but does not accept the depth to which it goes.
She is suspicious of dissent. Why I don't know. Something about facts and figures, when everything is quite plain and easy to discern for me. I tried to tell her what my real issue is:
The avg canadian (feel free to debate if you wish) as far as I can tell is generally ticked off at the way Harper is doing things but feel that all politicians are the same anyway, so it doesn't matter if they are angry or not. They feel that their lower government officials are generally unapproachable, and the higher wouldn't listen to them if they were screaming in their ears. Most blue collar workers care little about politics, and are unfortunately uneducated about how government works, and often don't care to know. If these attitudes continue, then we won't get anywhere, whether we have a good government in office or not. We won't progress toward an equal, secular society where gay bashing is unheard of, racism truly is a thing of the past, and women don't have to worry about getting veggies thrown at them (figuratively or literally) for getting an abortion.
You have to remember exactly what dissent is, as well. It's not defined by being true or false, it's defined by taking an opposing view to popular or majority opinion, coupled with a sense of non-conformity. Dissent is disagreement with or rejection of authority or doctrines of authority. Don't get me wrong, I've often been in positions of authority, and I have no problem with authority in general. What I have a problem with is repression of public media, voices and dissent in general. What I have a problem with is greedy assholes hijacking a country to benefit their pocketbook. What I have a big problem with is greedy assholes perpetuating an ideology to keep the public sheeped and confused. Some people get sucked into it, others don't. What I have a huge problem with is greedy assholes perpetuating the idea that people are all equal, and meanwhile feel the exact opposite and act as such in policy. What I really have an enormous problem with is money grubbing jerkoffs like Cheney taking a ride on the american dream train straight to the bank, covered in the blood of homosexuals and soldiers, writing off tax breaks for corporations....GOD I HOPE HE CHOKES ON A PRETZEL THE FAT BASTARD!
...ahem
Got a little fired up there, but you know how it goes when you feel impotent in your own country. :P
Anyway, I sent her an entire essay on traits of a fascist regime, and she still is unconvinced about what these fucktards in the US admin are all about. The spillover factor into canada seems obvious but trivial to her, and I'm not sure why. Obviously yes, we are going to be influenced, but it's what we are being influenced with that concerns me and many other young people!
In a way, she's more of a peace-loving hippy than I am in that she feels building homes and doing volunteer work is the best place to start. I disagree, pushing back at the right gov't people is what we should be doing. Maybe I'm just a new kind of hippy, or in the very least my own brand. :P

Meat for the Dogs.
That's what comes to mind when dealing with Harper. Just as I turn and think that there may be some redemption in the man and he's not leading us down the garden path, I get proven that it's all a lie and a machination. Nothing fails to disappoint.
I see a report that the Conservatives are working with provinces instead of slapping them around and telling them he can "sue me if you don't like it", and just as the feel goodness begins to wash over me, it's drained away when I read the reason behind the PM's words:
"Today's announcement with Premier Graham is a testament to what can be achieved when Ottawa and the provinces embrace the true spirit of open federalism and work together to make Canada stronger, safer and better," the Prime Minister said at the legislature in Fredericton.
Premier Williams, of Newfoundland, leads with the PremierNova Scotia in open defiance of the Prime minister. They are even refusing to pass budgets that have to deal with this new fascist face of Canadian Politics. It feels as if the Nazi's are in our houses.
"I would tell the people of New Brunswick that they shouldn't trust the Prime Minister under any circumstances," he said last night in comments relayed by his press secretary. "I would also say that pitting provinces against each other does nothing for this country."
Mr. Williams was asked about the Prime Minister's remarks during an annual conference of Eastern Canadian premiers and New England governors. Their meeting continues today in eastern Prince Edward Island and demonstrators are expected to turn out to protest against plans to reduce trade barriers through the region.

How's Gaza feeling now?
No matter what the illegal terrorists pressures the US and Israel level against the civilian populations in the area, the struggle for freedom and life continue. It always amazes me that you can attack civilians in a prison for 40 years and the world can't stop it.
"Starving, drying up and blocking aid do not sear the consciousness and do not weaken political movements. On the contrary Reality has refuted the chorus of experts and commentators who preached [on] behalf of the boycott policy. This daft notion that it is possible to topple an elected government by applying pressure on a helpless population suffered a complete failure."
However, things may not be as they appear. Although Hamas seems to have completely won the hearts and minds of the people subjected to this brutal 45 year occupation, the masters at the table as still smiling. The question is why? It's actually a simple answer.
In other words, Israel looks as if it is dusting off yet another blueprint for how to manage the Palestinians and their irritating obsession with sovereignty. Last time, under Oslo, the Palestinians were put in charge of policing the occupation on Israel's behalf. This time, as the Palestinians are sealed into their separate prisons masquerading as a state, Israel may believe that it can find a new jailer for the Palestinians -- the Arab world.

Fascist/Conservative Coup
So how the new "and improved" Supreme Court treating you?
Not good it seems. With Judge Alito and Judge Roberts on the court to enforce the new morality, things are starting to turn for the worst. Amazingly even after 7 years of conversion from Democracy to Despotism, the people still don't seem to notice.
Well, lets list what our children have to look forward too, just from this court alone.
People who believe the government is misusing tax funds to promote religious beliefs are no longer able to dispute this, well, not in a court.
“It’s a bad day for the First Amendment. The Supreme Court just put a big dent in the wall of separation between church and state, and a big smile on Pat Robertson’s face. Robertson’s American Center for Law and Justice and allied Religious Right groups have long called on the Court to restrict the right of Americans to challenge government expenditures that unlawfully mix church and state. That is exactly what the Court did today.”
“Today’s ruling will make it more difficult for citizens whose tax dollars are being unlawfully spent to subsidize religion to bring a complaint in court. It is also consistent with a broader strategy by right-wing judges and activists to restrict standing for average Americans to challenge powerful government and business interests."
Even though the law of congress requires it, the Environmental Protection Agency no longer has to enforce the laws regarding the Endangered Species Act. The act "...prohibits federal agency action that will jeopardize a species and calls for consultation between federal agencies."
Congress, though smartly limiting the money that can be spent in elections by Corporations, unfortunately was outdone by this court. Now you can pay as long as you use something other than corporate treasury funds. So expect to see candidates climbing to reach into the corporate pocket like the little children looking for loose change.
"I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." - Thomas Jefferson
Under this new court, they also passed a ruling that abortion restrictions do not have to include the rights of the mother or her life. So you will have to carry your baby to term, and die trying to give birth. You no longer have the right to oppose it.
Apparently, also, you can't protest freely anymore. If you are a student, if the principle doesn't like what you say, you can be suspended, and you have no recourse. Good luck protestors!
Welcome to the New American Century.
